Developing a community monitoring system for Wetland Management
This edition highlights The Nature Environment & Wildlife Society’s (NEWS) outreach under the IKI Living Lakes Biodiversity and Climate Project (IKI-LLBCP), celebrating Earth Day, Biodiversity Day, and Environment Day with over 270 students through interactive sessions and awareness activities. A stakeholder workshop on community-based wetland monitoring was also held with Cotton University, featuring expert talks and wide participation from academia and NGOs.
Outreach Activities
Earth Day 2025 – The NEWS team celebrated Earth Day on 22nd April 2025 at Desh Bhakta Tarun Ram Phukan ME School, Chakardo with 23 students through an interactive Quiz session and signing of a “Pledge Tree” as a commitment to protect earth by the students.
International Day of Biological Diversity 2025 – The NEWS team celebrated International Day of Biological Diversity 2025 on 22nd May at Parijaat Academy with 71 students from Grade 8-10. A ppt was delivered on “Co-existence with Snakes– Diversity of Snakes in Assam, Snake Bites and their Management” along with game activities on “Food Chain” and “Guess the Animal.”
World Environment Day 2025 – The NEWS team celebrated World Environment Day 2025 at Holy Home Senior Secondary School, Pamohi with 180 students from Grade 8-12. Students were introduced to eco-friendly alternatives to plastic, such as biodegradable materials, cloth bags, reusable containers, and other sustainable products. Screening of documentary on the theme “Ending Plastic pollution Globally” was completed along with the handover and distribution of 55 native saplings to the students.
Stakeholder Consultation Workshop on Developing a Community Monitoring System for Wetland
On 16 June 2025, NEWS under IKI-LLBCP, hosted a one-day workshop on “Developing a Community Monitoring System for Wetland” in collaboration with Cotton University’s Department of Environmental Biology and Wildlife Sciences. Dr. Narayan Sharma (Cotton University) and Ms. Sudeshna Gupta (Chester Zoo, UK) delivered insightful keynote talks on citizen science and digital tools like the ‘Lim-Know’ app. Dr. Mayur Bawri (NEWS) introduced the goals of LLBCP and its vision for Deepor Beel. Several experts, namely; Prof. Saibal Sengupta (Assam Don Bosco University), Prof. Partha Pratim Baruah (Guwahati University), and Dr. Mayuri Chabukdhara (Cotton University), along with researchers, students, and representatives from NGOs including Aaranyak, Bombay Natural History Society, Earthful Foundation, 7Weaves, and The Midway Journey.
