The Smart and Climate Friendly Logistics in India” project, commissioned in November 2025, is now in its initial implementation phase. Jointly with the project implementation partner, the Logistics Division of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI), Government of India, the priority activities to be taken up were identified. These include:

a) Capacity building and technical handholding for preparing state and city logistics plans for nearly 50 cities and a few selected States;

b) Logistics workforce skills gap analysis and recommendations to reinforce skills in the logistics sector in India,

c) AI and GIS based decision support system for optimal siting of multi-modal logistics parks (MMLP) in India to help plan about 35 proposed MMLPs, d) Road freight logistics performance assessment and recommendations for selected road logistics corridors.

AI based solutions are preferred, and setting up a Knowledge Platform to facilitate knowledge exchange and application are part of the planned solutions.

The Implementation Agreement for the project is set to be signed between GIZ and the implementation partner (DPIIT) in April 2026 following the completion of formal approval process. Discussions have also been initiated with the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce on engaging with the private sector and with GIZ’s PROKLIMA project on cold chain logistics.
