Analysing Pimpri Chinchwad's Municipal Budget to Determine Alignment with Sustainable Mobility Goals

Budget allocations are crucial for cities to turn policies into action. Over the past decade, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) introduced forward-thinking policies like the Parking Policy (2018), Comprehensive Mobility Plan (2018), and Non-Motorised Transport Policy (2021) to promote sustainable transport. To assess if budgetary support matched these ambitions, ITDP analysed PCMC’s budgets from 2022-23 to 2024-25, revealing a 31% increase in transport spending by 2024, with allocations for walking and cycling infrastructure doubling. While 55% of the transport budget is now focused on sustainable modes, more investment in public buses is still critical to achieving the city's goal of 90% trips through sustainable transport. The budget analysis report can be found here. The analysis was presented to the City’s Commissioner who is committed to improving future city budgets to align with its ambitious goals.

Chennai’s Streets Set for Transformation: Pedestrian-Friendly Corridors on the Way!

Chennai is undergoing a street makeover! Two major streets, Race Course Road (Guindy Bridge to Chakrapani Road) and the Thiruvottriyur High Road-Arunachaleshwarar Koil Street loop (Washermanpet Metro to Toll Gate Metro), are being revamped to become safe, pedestrian-friendly corridors under phase one of the Complete Streets Programme. The project kicked off with Bhoomi Pooja ceremonies led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. Underground utilities like water, sewage, electricity, and internet cables are being reorganised to prevent frequent road digging, while enhancing pedestrian infrastructure above ground. This effort follows successful redevelopments of Khader Nawaz Khan and Monegar Choultry roads, with a total of 11 km of streets to be transformed under the Programme.
