Empowering women of Deepor beel by Inspiring sustainable choices.

From July 2nd to 5th, 2024, Nature Environment and Wildlife Society (NEWS) hosted a transformative four-day capacity-building program for women’s groups at the Azara Boys Club, Keotpara. Focused on bamboo and water hyacinth crafts, this initiative aimed to empower local women by teaching them traditional handicraft techniques using locally available materials. Under the expert guidance of Mrs. Momi Rabha, Mr. Ajay Sinal, Mrs. Manisha Borah, and Mrs. Purnima Talukdar, participants learned essential skills in crafting and product creation. The program not only provided economic opportunities but also promoted sustainable use of natural resources, fostering economic empowerment and environmental stewardship.

Nurturing the Next Generation for nature tourism and environmental stewardship

NEWS organized a three-day training program from July 9th to 11th, 2024, at the Parijat Academy, Pamohi, aimed at empowering local youth of Deepor Beel. Titled “Capacity Building of Local Guides in Communication Skills, Video Photography, and Storytelling,” this initiative under the IKI-Living Lakes Biodiversity and Climate Project (LLBCP) covered essential skills such as photography, video documentary creation, and storytelling. Guided by experts Dr. Naveen Pandey and Mr. Pramod Kalita, 30 youths were equipped with tools to promote sustainable tourism and enhance their connection to local heritage. The program culminated in a nature trail on August 15th, 2024, at Garbhanga Forest Reserve, where participants engaged in bird identification and wildlife observation with guidance from Mr. Kamal Ingti and Dr. Anwaruddin Choudhury.

From Knowledge to Empowerment: Strengthening Communities through Backyard Poultry Farming

On July 30th and 31st, 2024, NEWS, in collaboration with the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department of Assam, organized a capacity-building program on “Backyard Poultry Farming Phase-II” at the Feed Analytical Laboratory, Khanapara. This program aimed to provide sustainable livelihood opportunities for women in wetland-dependent communities around Deepor Beel. With expert guidance from Dr. Nayanjit Deka, Dr. Sabitri Baruah, and Dr. Dwipen Sarma, participants gained hands-on experience in poultry farming techniques, contributing to gender equality and climate-resilient practices.

World Elephant Day Celebration

On August 12th, 2024, NEWS celebrated World Elephant Day at Maghuapara L.P. School, focusing on raising awareness about threats to elephants. The event included student engagement through drawing competitions and a documentary screening in Assamese, enhancing local understanding of wildlife conservation issues.

Advancing Biodiversity-Friendly Agricultural Practices

On September 5th, 2024, NEWS hosted a capacity-building program on biodiversity-friendly agricultural practices, focusing on traditional organic farming techniques. Participants learned about “Panchagavya,” an organic fertilizer, through hands-on training and demonstrations, promoting sustainable agricultural practices and resilience.

Integrated Wetlands Management Training

From September 3rd to 5th, 2024, Ms. Ajanta Dey and Dr. Mayur Bawri from NEWS participated in a workshop on “Integrated Wetlands Management” in Guwahati. Part of the NERAQ initiative, organized in collaboration with GIZ, Wetlands International South Asia (WISA), and the State Wetland Authority Assam. the workshop aimed to enhance capacities in preparing and implementing Integrated Management Plans for Ramsar Sites. The training included practical exercises at Deepor Beel, emphasizing innovative tools and knowledge exchange.

Sustainability Leadership Journey

The third Sustainability Leadership Journey commenced in St. Lucia, South Africa, gathering global leaders to focus on sustainable lake and wetland conservation. From Nature Environment & Wildlife Society (NEWS) who is the implementing partner of IKI-LLBCP two trainees and Project Manager, have joined the event, sharing their experience in bioremediation and engaging in discussions and field experiences with participants from different countries in wetland conservation.

Through these diverse initiatives, NEWS is driving sustainable development and environmental stewardship, fostering a resilient and self-sufficient community.
