Regional Workshop on Cooling India’s Cities

Amidst rising temperatures and rapid urbanisation, India’s cooling demand is surging, projected to increase by 15-20 percent annually. Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, faces significant cooling challenges, with over 50 percent of household energy consumption devoted to cooling.
The India Cooling Action Plan (ICAP) aims to address this demand while promoting sustainable cooling solutions, including District Cooling (DC). On June 28, 2024, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) in association with GIZ, and Tabreed India will host a workshop in Chennai under the Energy Efficient Cooling Programme, supported by IKI.
This workshop will foster knowledge sharing, initiate discourse around the need for a long-term vision, and will clear any misconceptions around the adaptability of emerging cooling technologies. The discussion will involve key stakeholders from Tamil Nadu State including government officials, utilities, private sector, developers, research institutes, civil society and media representatives.
The primary objectives include:
● Understanding DC and related technologies and scope for adoption in Tamil Nadu, and specifically in Chennai using case studies of greenfield projects under implementation and brownfield developments which are under operation.
● Exploring opportunities and challenges in the policy and practice ecosystem for cooling in Tamil Nadu state.
● Building networks of trust that provide knowledge and support in the transition towards providing energy efficient cooling solutions that are accessible to all sections of society through project development activities.
