IKI India Thematic Workshop on Mitigation

Project : Indo-German Support Project for Climate Action in India

GIZ IND & TERI | India Habitat Centre, New Delhi

06 Dec 2024 to 06 Dec 2024

Objective

This workshop aims to bring together the IKI India Implementation Community to help creating an understanding on India’s approach towards reducing GHG emissions toward net-zero. We will focus on key sectors and want to identify opportunities for scaling up.

Background

India has set a target to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070. This goal aims to align with the global push to limit temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, with a current focus on enhancing renewable energy usage, and promoting sustainable practices across sectors.

In 2022, the country updated its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), including:

  • reducing the emissions intensity of its GDP by 45% by 2030, from 2005 level,
  • achieving 50% cumulative electric power installed capacity from non-fossil fuelbased energy resources by 2030,
  • creating additional carbon sinks of 2.5 to 3 billion tons of CO2 equivalent through additional forest and tree cover by 2030.
  • adopt a climate friendly and a cleaner path than the one followed hitherto by others at corresponding level of economic development

This NDC reflects India's intention to meet its climate goals in conjunction with its growth. To achieve these, India has taken several initiatives across sectors, such as its Solar Park Scheme, the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the Roadmap and Action Plan for greening the steel sector in India, the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM EDRIVE) Scheme.

The International Climate Initiative (IKI) collaborates with the Indian government and various organizations to promote low-carbon development and enhance resilience to climate change. Its projects in India focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, fostering renewable energy, improving energy e􀆯iciency, and promoting sustainable urban development.

Through technical support, capacity-building initiatives and financial assistance, IKI aids India's transition towards a greener, more sustainable economy, while there is also a need to understand the challenges and gaps that emerge in the sectors that are playing a key role in India’s climate goals.
