India has introduced two new building codes—the Energy Conservation and Sustainable Building Code (ECSBC) for commercial structures and the Eco Niwas Samhita (ENS) for residential properties—aimed at enhancing energy efficiency, sustainability, and occupant well-being. These regulations apply to large buildings with an electricity load of 100 kW or more, impacting offices, malls, and apartment complexes.
The key provisions include energy efficiency through better appliances and lighting, renewable energy integration, water conservation, waste management, biodiversity preservation, and improved indoor air quality. Businesses benefit from lower operational costs and improved workplace environments, while homeowners enjoy reduced electricity bills and healthier living spaces.
Effective implementation will require collaboration between the government, industry, and institutions through awareness campaigns and training programs. These codes mark a significant step toward India’s green transition, fostering eco-friendly construction and sustainable urban development.
