The Union Budget 2025–26, presented by the Government of India, marks a significant stride towards sustainable urban development and the upliftment of street vendors. Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, emphasized that the budget lays a robust foundation for "Viksit Bharat" (Developed India) by initiating transformative reforms in urban development, housing, and infrastructure.
A central feature of the budget is the establishment of €103.3 billion Urban Challenge Fund. This fund aims to implement initiatives such as Cities as Growth Hubs, Creative Redevelopment of Cities, and enhancements in Water and Sanitation. These initiatives reflect the government's commitment to fostering sustainable and inclusive urban development, enhancing urban resilience, and advancing the vision of a developed India.
The budget also focuses on empowering street vendors through the revamped PM SVANidhi scheme. Having already benefited over 68 lakh street vendors, the scheme will now facilitate access to enhanced bank loans, introduce UPI-linked credit cards with a ₹30,000 limit, and provide capacity-building support. These measures aim to boost the income of street vendors and improve the quality of life in urban areas.
Minister stated, "This Budget reinforces our government’s commitment to ensuring that the benefits of urbanization reach every citizen." The initiatives outlined in the budget are poised to drive transformative reforms over the next five years, focusing on enhancing growth potential and strengthening global competitiveness.
