The 'India State of Forest Report 2023' (ISFR 2023), released by Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, reveals a 1,445 sq km increase in the nation's forest and tree cover since 2021. The total forest and tree cover now stands at 8,27,357 sq km, accounting for 25.17% of India's geographical area. Specifically, forest cover comprises 7,15,343 sq km (21.76%), while tree cover accounts for 1,12,014 sq km (3.41%).
The report highlights that Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, and Rajasthan are the top states contributing to this growth. Madhya Pradesh maintains the largest forest and tree cover area at 85,724 sq km. In terms of forest cover percentage relative to geographical area, Lakshadweep leads with 91.33%, followed by Mizoram at 85.34%.
Additionally, the assessment indicates a 262 million cubic meter increase in the total growing stock, now estimated at 6,430 million cubic meters. India's forest carbon stock has risen by 81.5 million tonnes, reaching 7,285.5 million tonnes, contributing significantly towards the nation's carbon sequestration goals.
These findings underscore India's commitment to enhancing its forest resources and achieving environmental sustainability.
