Description

India has launched its updated National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) at COP 16 to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Cali, Colombia. Union Minister of State for Environment, Shri Kirti Vardhan Singh, released the document during a special event on October 30, 2024. The updated NBSAP aligns with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) and aims to halt biodiversity loss by 2030 while promoting harmony with nature by 2050. It emphasizes ecosystem restoration, species recovery, and community-driven conservation.

The strategy was developed through an extensive consultative process involving 23 central ministries, state organizations, and local communities. Special Secretary Shri Tanmay Kumar highlighted India's three-tier governance structure for biodiversity conservation under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002. The initiative, guided by Union Minister Bhupender Yadav and Secretary Leena Nandan, focuses on sectoral integration, biodiversity financing, and ecosystem-based management.
