Union Minister of Steel and Heavy Industries, launched India’s Green Steel Taxonomy on December 12, 2024, at Vigyan Bhavan, marking a significant milestone in the country’s journey towards decarbonizing the steel sector. India becomes the first nation to define Green Steel, categorizing it into a star-rating system based on CO₂ emission intensity. Steel with emissions below 2.2 tCO₂/t qualifies for a green rating, with five-star steel having emissions under 1.6 tCO₂/t.
The taxonomy mandates emission reductions and will be reviewed every three years. The National Institute of Secondary Steel Technology (NISST) will oversee certification. The event also included stakeholder consultations on the National Mission on Green Steel (NMGS) and the Green Steel Public Procurement Policy (GSPPP). The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability, ensuring India’s steel sector remains competitive while reducing its carbon footprint.
